HARPOON

"a promising
output tragically marred by willful obscurity..." Rob
Richardson, Pooch Planet
Harpoon is the nom
de plume of Glenn Brown, a reclusive New Jersey resident who
has been releasing home-made cassettes since 1983. Harpoon's
debut CD release, A
Gradual Understanding, is a sampling of highlights from those
cassettes and covers the years 1986-1997. Wildly erratic yet
remarkably inconsistent, compact pop gems rub elbows with unwieldy
sonic experimentation and everyone goes home happy. Predates
the official birth-date of "lo-fi" by a good six years
if that means anything to you. The rarely-seen Mr. Brown continues
to decline all requests for interviews and shows. Future plans
are rumored to include the compilation of a second CD of archival
material for release later this year and the recording of the
first new Harpoon material since 1997. But things could change.
